ENGAGEMENT SHOOT

And we’re off! 2012′s wedding season started last Sunday with an engagement shoot. Paula & Peter will be getting married in mid-March, so got their e-shoot done with loads of time to spare…and somehow we managed 30-40 minutes without getting caught in the rain! Relaxed from the start of the shoot, these guys were easy to photograph, and their wedding should be a really easy going day, in a location I love shooting in & around, Lough Rynn Castle!

Part 1 of 2, obviously! And here’s a selection of my favourite images that I shot at 2011‘s weddings. Again, they’re in no particular order, well they are, but it’s file-name order over anything! It’s by no means a definite list, more a case of me flying through & picking some which stood out. With 2012 wedding season quickly approaching, here’s a few of my favourite engagement shots from last year, in no particular order! 2011 was a tricky year for eshoots, purely in terms of the weather & with virtually no summer meaning no sweet evening light, and a bunch of sessions which had to be rescheduled, I’m seriously hoping 2012 is the year we have some proper spring, summer & autumn seasons!

ENGAGEMENT SHOOTS 2012!

As the 2012 wedding season gets closer, end of February is when I start, that also means I’ll be starting to shoot engagement sessions very shortly!

The engagement shoot I do with couples is complimentary with all wedding packages, and it really is the best way to get superb wedding images, as it gets you used to being in front of the camera!

An engagement shoot for couples usually lasts for around one hour. Choice of location is entirely up to you—anywhere within reason and sometimes it’s great to use two or three locations to get a variety of images!

What can I do with the images? Some previous clients have done the following:

Use the images on wedding invitations.
Have a large image mounted for signing by guests at the wedding reception.
Have a guestbook made up for signing at the wedding reception.
Have images framed for hanging around your home.

But it’s really up to you what you use the images for! The most important thing is that it gets you used to the camera!

For any super adventurous clients, I’d love to do some different shoots this year. In April I’m heading up Knocknarae with a couple to do a full shoot on the way up the mountain before reaching the top of the cairn…the views up there are outstanding, and that will certainly be a mega eshoot! If you have any outdoor interests, surfing, biking, anything really & you’d like to add some of it into the shoot, please let me know, as they can make some great, fun images…and as I used to shoot Formula 1, capturing action pictures is a breeze!

BEHIND THE IMAGE

Time to go behind the image again! This time a shot from the ceremony. Every church tends to be a little different, however, Drumcliff Church is a little more different than most, mainly due to the aisles being along the sides of the pews, as opposed to running down the centre of the church. It’s also quite restrictive in that it is quite hard to get in front of the bride & groom. However I loved shooting in there for Laura & Karl’s wedding, and would love to get another wedding in there.

Along with the pews down the side, the church also has an upper level running on both sides of the church, which means you can right above the congregation and get some different angles that are impossible to get in other churches. So for the vows of this wedding I placed myself toward the back side of the church to show a more atmospheric ‘first kiss’ shot and try to include the bridal party & families. This image worked best in black & white, even though the colours in the church are really nice, I didn’t want anything to distract from the main subjects, the bride & groom.

WEDDING 30th DECEMBER BALLYGAR-ATHLONE

Details, details…Marie & Peter’s wedding last Friday had all the details! From the cool blackboards to the block quotes to the old bus for the bridal party. This was such a fun wedding to photograph, albeit a tough one due the lovely weather conditions we had! But I don’t think Marie or Peter stopped smiling all day!

From the moment I arrived in the morning to find all the girls getting ready, the champagne was flowing & everybody was having a laugh. A few nerves crept in towards 1pm, but they were quickly swept aside by the girls! Even the ceremony was very relaxed, as I’m sure the bus ride to the Hodson Bay Hotel was too!

With the rain not giving in & darkness creeping in, we shot all the photographs around the hotel…every inch of natural light was sought!

Shooting alongside me during the day was Niall from Complete Weddings. Florist was Ann Harlow Signature Flowers.
Hair stylist was Tracey Kelly & make-up artist Kathryn O’Hara. Church music was Nicola McGuire who also joined her band the Cosmonauts later that evening!

WEDDING 28th DECEMBER CALRY-BALLINCAR SLIGO

Happy New Year everybody…here’s to a great 2012!

First post of the year was my second to last wedding of 2011, taking place in Sligo. The night before I think I got about 4 hours sleep due to more gale force winds battering the houses out near the coast of Sligo…it’s just non-stop and is about to hit again tonight…I really miss the frozen Ireland of a year ago! But anyway, due to the wind, I was settled on doing all photography inside the following day for Martina & Keith’s wedding. Much to my surprise, we actually got outside for some pictures, which was great!

Martina was bridesmaid at two previous weddings I’ve photographed, so it’s great working with somebody who already knows what I’m after & how I work. I didn’t have to worry regardless as everybody at the wedding was really relaxed & easy going, so we got some great relaxed portraits both outside & inside the Radisson Hotel.

This wedding was also my first using two 5D mk2 cameras and it’s definitely letting me get some images I would have previously had trouble getting. I shoot pretty much all natural light, so the high iso capabilities of the camera is superb. I am still looking forward to the 1DX released later in the year, but for now it’s great shooting with these cameras.

Flowers on the day were by Feehily’s Florist. Make-up by Ann Young. Hair by Melinda. Video by Caroline at Pink Lime.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS!

Hopefully any last minute shopping is almost done, if not, why are you reading this! At least this year it’s possible to do whatever is needed, as we certainly don’t have the snow & ice, much to my dismay! If, like me, you’re missing the snowy scenes, here’s a gorgeous image I took back in winter 2009 near Churchill in Canada, real frozen planet stuff! Again I can’t recommend ChurchillWild enough if you want to see polar bears in the wild, on foot hiking, not in a tundra buggy! There’s nothing like being 30 foot away on the ground from the largest carnivore on the planet to put things into perspective!

Finally, I just want to wish past, present & any potential future clients who might be reading this, a very Happy Christmas. I have a couple more before the end of 2011, before a short break before 2012′s wedding season kicks off!

40 NEW RELEASES!

It is almost Christmas, so why not have a deluge of new images on the art gallery website! You’ll find 40 glorious Hassleblad Xpan2 shots right here in the new Panoramic gallery. These have been scanned with an Imacon scanner, and for the past two weeks I’ve been painstakingly going through each one, all 500mb each, to clean off any dirt on the scan and to get the colours matching the original transparency which was beside me on the lightbox here in my office.

As mentioned, all are from the Xpan on Fuji Velvia film, and were taken during my roadtrip to the southwestern USA a few weeks ago.

I do have some 30 odd more scans I’ve chosen not to include, so in the coming weeks I’ll go through some of those and of course some that are already in the gallery, in a Behind the Image series.
