Documentary wedding photography so what is it? It seems like an easy question, straightforward to answer seeing as most wedding photographers these days consider themselves a documentary wedding photographer, and most couples seem to want documentary wedding photography.

Documentary wedding photography is all about capturing moments during the wedding day. Not staging anything. Not posing anything. Photographing real moments, that will probably never happen again today or at another wedding. That to me is the essence of real documentary wedding photography.

Do I consider myself a documentary wedding photographer? Yes and no! I do shoot some of the wedding day in a pure documentary way but overall I like to consider myself a relaxed wedding photographer! I’m shooting the family portraits, I’m shooting the bridal party and bride & groom but in a relaxed way, I’m capturing your friends in a group shot if you want that. Around all those relaxed portraits, yes, I’m looking for those real moments to capture and help tell the story of your wedding day.

I’m lucky I get to work with the same families over and over, and take the image above for example. I recently photographed Aisling’s (the bride in the image) sister-in-law’s wedding, and as soon as I seen her and said hello, it came up immediately with the other bridesmaids that I was the photographer that took the image of the flowergirl & Aisling checking out their shoes in the morning! As people, we just remember moments more than anything else. Those moments help take us back to that part of the day!
